The People’s Lawyer

Governor Maura Healey grew up as the oldest of five in a tight-knit family, raised by her mom, a school nurse, and later her stepfather, a teacher and local union president. She went on to attend Harvard and became a litigation partner at a major law firm — often the only woman in the room, and always lifting others as she rose.

In 2014, Gov. Healey was elected as Massachusetts attorney general, winning  reelection in 2018. In her role as the “people’s lawyer,” she took on difficult issues impacting Massachusetts residents, including the opioid epidemic, the climate crisis, escalating health care costs, and student loan debt. Her election made her the nation’s first openly gay state attorney general.

A Battle-Tested Leader

In 2022, Gov. Healey was elected the 73rd governor of Massachusetts where she quickly  delivered on key promises to help Massachusetts become a leader in clean energy, a more affordable and equitable place to live, and a great place for businesses to operate. On her first day in office, Gov. Healey appointed the nation’s first cabinet-level climate chief and created the Office of Climate Innovation and Resilience to coordinate policies across all of the Massachusetts state government to address the climate crisis. She has also prioritized education and workforce development with free school meals for K-12 students, cost-free community college for Massachusetts residents and career apprenticeships accessible to more students and workers.

Gov. Healey worked to make Massachusetts more affordable by cutting taxes for the first time in more than 20 years, including the most generous child and family tax credit in the country. Additionally, she signed the $5 billion Affordable Homes Act, the state’s largest ever housing investment, to create tens of thousands of homes and lower costs; and the $4 billion Mass Leads Act, to invest in Massachusetts businesses, create good jobs, and keep the state’s innovation economy the best in the world.

Gov. Healey is a fierce advocate for reproductive freedoms, and on the second anniversary of the overturning of Roe v. Wade, she signed an executive order protecting access to emergency abortion care. Additionally, Gov. Healey worked with the state Legislature to ensure protections for providers and patients seeking abortion care and codified those provisions into the state’s shield law.

Safeguard Massachusetts’ Fundamental Freedoms

When elected, Gov. Healey became the first woman and first openly LGBTQ+ person elected Governor of Massachusetts. She is now running for reelection as a battle-tested leader who is prepared to meet the moment and fight back against MAGA extremists in Washington. Gov. Healey is passionate about protecting our fundamental freedoms, safeguarding abortion access, and lowering costs for working families. EMILYs List is proud to stand with her in this reelection fight and we look forward to watching her continue her impactful work for Massachusetts.
