A Groundbreaker for Texans

Julie Johnson is an attorney and trailblazing lawmaker in Congress representing Texas’ 32nd Congressional District. Since beginning her legal career in 1991, she has defended workers, advocated for students, and broken barriers for women. She represented the 115th District in the Texas House of Representatives for three terms, where she championed consumer protection, affordable health care, protections for the LGBTQ+ community, and fought for reproductive freedom in the face of the radical and dangerous abortion bans Texas Republicans imposed in the state. 

Johnson made history as one of the first openly gay elected officials from Dallas County when she won her Texas House seat in 2018 and again in 2024, when she became the first LGBTQ+ person elected to Congress from the South with EMILYs List’s support.

A Fierce Defender of Freedom

Johnson has been one of Texas’ strongest voices for reproductive rights. As vice chair of the Texas Women’s Health Caucus, she earned a 100% voting record from Planned Parenthood Texas Votes and has consistently opposed the state’s cruel abortion bans. She voted against the law that placed bounties on doctors, stood up to Republicans’ sham “women’s health” clinics designed to mislead patients, and authored HB 3744, to protect pharmacists prescribing abortion medication. She also co-authored HB 916, ensuring Texas women could finally access a full year’s supply of birth control. Johnson remains steadfast in her commitment to codifying Roe v. Wade, and protecting women and physicians from prosecution or unconstitutional travel bans for seeking abortion care.

Beyond reproductive freedom, Johnson is also committed to strengthening gun safety laws, reducing the cost of prescription drugs, and protecting the Affordable Care Act so that every Texan is able to get the critical health care they need for themselves and their families. She has consistently stood up for democracy, working to safeguard elections and protect voting rights from Republican efforts to undermine them.

Texas Republicans gerrymandered their maps to undermine the voting power of Texans of color and vulnerable communities, but Julie Johnson isn’t backing down. Julie is staying in the fight and running in Texas’ 33rd Congressional District to stand up for the same people and causes that have defined her public service career. Julie is committed to protecting democracy by restoring reproductive freedom by codifying Roe v. Wade into law, strengthening common sense gun safety measures, reducing the cost of prescription drugs, and protecting the Affordable Care Act from ongoing attacks.
