Jasmine Crockett
Committed to Fighting Injustice
Jasmine was raised in a very civically-engaged household. Her father, Joe, was a school teacher and preacher at their home church. Her mother, Gwen, served in the federal government for more than three decades. Together, her parents instilled a sense of faith, a responsibility to serve others, and taught her to never be bullied.
Jasmine graduated from the University of Houston Law Center and kicked off her legal career as a public defender in rural East Texas. Frustrated with a system of unjust laws and a state government that wasn’t responding to the everyday needs of Texans, Jasmine rolled up her sleeves, laced up her boots and ran for the Texas House of Representatives. Challenging an incumbent, Jasmine was outspent five to one, but never outworked. She went on to unseat the incumbent by 90 votes out of thousands — proving that every single vote matters.
Refusing to Back Down
The youngest black lawmaker and the only Black freshman in Texas during the 87th Legislative Session — widely considered the most conservative session in Texas history — Jasmine quickly became known for her tenacity. As Texas Republicans passed sweeping bills to ban abortion, make it harder to vote, erase history and rewrite science in schools while doing nothing to address COVID, inflation, or the failing power grid — Jasmine rallied her colleagues and led the charge against the Republicans’ worst attacks. She filed more bills than any other freshman legislator, voted numerous times against efforts to restrict reproductive freedom, and petitioned the Supreme Court of the United States to strike down Texas’ near total abortion ban as unconstitutional. In addition, she was one of the lead architects of the 2021 Texas House Quorum Break, drawing national attention to the Republicans’ restrictive voter suppression agenda.
Recognizing these battles were happening across the country, Jasmine took her fight to the national stage and ran for Texas’ 30th Congressional District, winning a nine-way race. Since her arrival to Congress in 2023, Jasmine has become one of the fiercest defenders of democracy in Congress. She has spoken out against Republican extremism and a devastating economic agenda, while continuing to champion the rights of LGBTQ+ Americans, access to affordable health care, and protections for voters across the country.
A Critical Voice in D.C.
Jasmine is a powerful voice in Congress, and she is running for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Republican incumbent John Cornyn, a Trump loyalist who is more concerned with being a puppet than fighting for Texans. But Jasmine has been a fierce champion for our rights and freedoms and EMILYs List is proud to support her in the fight to flip Texas’ U.S. Senate seat.
