A Fighter for Working Texans

Gina Hinojosa is a native Texan, born and raised in the Rio Grande Valley, and a proud product of Brownsville public schools. After graduating from The University of Texas and earning her law degree from George Washington University, Gina began her career as a civil rights and union lawyer, representing working Texans who were fighting for fair wages, safe workplaces, and the benefits they earned to support their families.

From the start, Gina built a reputation for taking on powerful interests and holding corrupt politicians accountable. In 2005, she served on the legal team that sued House Majority Leader Tom DeLay on money laundering charges, kickstarting her long track record of fighting against corruption. Gina never planned to run for office but when state budget cuts threatened to close her son’s elementary school, she organized parents, ran for the Austin ISD School Board, and won. As board president, she helped keep every public school in the district open, proving that when Texans fight back together, they can win.

Putting Texas Families First

As neighborhood schools continued to close across Texas due to chronic underfunding, Gina stepped up again — this time running for the Texas House of Representatives. Since her election, she has been a fierce champion for Texas families, delivering on public education and health care while fighting back against Republican Gov. Greg Abbott’s corruption and relentless attacks on reproductive freedom and voting rights. In 2019, she helped deliver more than $11 billion in new funding for Texas public schools, led efforts to reduce overtesting, and passed pay raises for every teacher in Texas.

Gina has also been a leader on health care, sponsoring legislation that secured nearly $1 billion in federal funding to expand health care in Travis County. She passed the most significant corporate reform legislation in a decade, creating public benefit corporations to ensure businesses serve the public good — not just shareholders. Her record also includes strengthening public safety and expanding benefits for service members. Across every issue, Gina has fought to lower costs, expand access to care, and protect the dignity of working Texans.

Taking on Gov. Greg Abbott’s Corruption

For over a decade, Greg Abbott has helped powerful insiders and wealthy donors get richer while working Texans struggle to get by. Schools are underfunded, health care is out of reach for too many families, and costs keep rising — while Greg Abbott lines his own pockets. His approval ratings have plummeted and Texans are fed up with his Trump-first agenda. Gina Hinojosa is running to put an end to this corruption. As a proven fighter for Texas values, EMILYs List is proud to support her in this race and work to elect her as the next governor of Texas.
