Patty Murray
A mom with a mission
Denounced by a state representative during her 1992 U.S. Senate race as “just a mom in tennis shoes,” defiant trailblazer Sen. Patty Murray proved skeptics wrong and when she defeated an incumbent and became Washington’s first woman senator. Since then, Murray has built a solid record of achievement on veterans’ issues, agriculture, transportation, and labor.
A fearless advocate on the front lines
A hard worker and principled legislator, Murray is the highest ranking Democratic woman in the Senate and sits on several key committees, including the powerful Appropriations Committee. As a senior member of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, she’s been on the front lines in the battle for health care reform and has worked with other pro-choice Democratic women senators to eliminate egregious gender disparities in insurance coverage.
An unwavering voice for women
Murray is deeply committed to reproductive freedom. She fought for increased funding for the National Family Planning Program, encouraged the FDA to make emergency contraception accessible over the counter, and fought to expand the Violence Against Women Act. As a crowd of Republicans vies to challenge her in November, we must band together and work hard to ensure the re-election of one of our leading women in Congress.
