Kirsten Gillibrand
An advocate for the nation's heroes
New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand earned well-deserved accolades for her tireless advocacy on behalf of 9/11 first responders, bringing the issue to the nation’s attention and winning a significant legislative victory. She also played a key role in overturning the discriminatory “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy to allow gay service members to serve serving openly in the military.
A leader who's quickly proven her clout
Kirsten has been a critical part of the Senate blockade against the House Republicans’ anti-woman agenda, courageously standing up for choice, women’s health, and the well-being of our families. She made her stand against the GOP early on, and she’s fighting for our rights and health care access on the Senate floor day in and out. One of the few senators with small children, Kirsten gave birth to her second child just hours after casting a vote as a member of the House.
A costly race in 2012
After being appointed to the Senate seat once held by Hillary Clinton in 2009, Kirsten quickly launched a successful statewide campaign to win the seat in 2010. Now she’s running for a full six-year term in this vast and costly state. Kirsten proved she’s a tough competitor when she ousted an entrenched incumbent in a GOP-leaning House seat in 2006. Now this fast-rising star needs immediate help to withstand the GOP’s efforts to take over this Senate seat in 2012.
