- History-making senator fighting for a second term
- A true champion for women, working families, and veterans
- New Hampshire’s all-female delegation at risk
A trailblazing woman leader
The only woman in U.S. history to be elected both governor and U.S. senator, Jeanne Shaheen is a truly remarkable leader. In three terms as New Hampshire governor, she expanded access to kindergarten, required insurers to cover contraception, and repealed a 150-year-old law making abortion a felony. In the U.S. Senate, Shaheen recently pushed through an amendment bearing her name that requires federal health insurance plans to cover abortion for military women who are victims of sexual assault. She’s also a key player in the fight to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act and establish pay equity for women.
Strengthening an ailing economy
As a former small business owner, Shaheen knows how to help entrepreneurs succeed and spur economic development. She’s pushed through key bills, including the Small Business Jobs Act and Small Business Innovation Research program, and cosponsored legislation to help small businesses sell products overseas. Shaheen led the fight to extend unemployment benefits and mitigate foreclosure for struggling families, and has secured major funding to support veterans. From her post on the Energy Committee, she pushed for a national energy policy that would create jobs, cut costs for businesses and consumers, reduce pollution, and end subsidies for Big Oil.
A top gop target
In 2008, Shaheen defeated a sitting GOP senator despite being heavily attacked and outspent. Now Republicans are looking for payback -- and their right-wing, deep-pocketed allies are gearing up for another spending spree. A longtime EMILY’s List favorite, Shaheen needs unified support from the EMILY’s List community to defend her seat and help protect New Hampshire’s status as the only state in the country where women control the entire Congressional delegation and the Governor’s office.
