Debbie Stabenow
Putting Michigan first
From retooling the state’s manufacturing economy to protecting its Great Lakes, Michigan Sen. Debbie Stabenow has dedicated her career to fighting for Michigan families. Chair of the Agriculture Committee, she’s developing sustainable policy that protects family farms. She’s working to expand foreign markets for American goods and foster development of new technology. Debbie’s innovative leadership helped stabilize and ultimately save America’s auto industry -- and Michigan jobs.
Protecting women's health
Debbie Stabenow has spent decades working towards health care reform. She made sure that the new law provides comprehensive care for women, and delivered one of the most memorable lines of the debate when GOP Sen. Jon Kyl wondered why maternity coverage should be included in standard policies, because he would never need it. “I think your mom probably did,” Debbie shot back. A committed defender of reproductive freedom, she’s fought to expand access to family planning and birth control.
A perennial GOP target
Michigan is a perennial battleground state, and Debbie’s effectiveness makes her a permanent target of right-wing vitriol. The GOP field already includes Congressman-turned-lobbyist Pete Hoekstra and businessman Clark Durant -- who comes with the endorsement of former Sen. Spence Abraham. Polling shows she's in for a tough race; her colleague, Sen. Carl Levin, predicts that Republicans “are going to come after her with big bucks.” Early support from EMILY’s List will help Debbie withstand the inevitable onslaught of outside spending and keep up her fight in the Senate.
