Yesterday, the 113th Congress was sworn into office, including 16 new EMILY’s List women to the House and 9 EMILY’s List women to the Senate. With a record number of women entering both chambers and the incoming freshman class being the most diverse in history, there was a lot to celebrate. So we did!

Our WOMEN VOTE! programs has been very busy this year. But there’s no sleep ‘til Election Day for EMILY’s List and WOMEN VOTE!, as they launched a new voter education program aimed at independent women in battleground states from coast to coast.

Cheri Bustos is running for Congress in Illinois’ 17^th district. Her opponent is Tea Party-backed Republican Bobby Schilling. Although Schilling is an incumbent, Obama won the district in 2008, which makes the 17^th district crucial for Democrats looking to take back control of the House. Cheri Bustos is a rock star candidate and is poised to do great things for Illinois and the country. But what you may not know about her is that she’s a grandmother, an athlete and an incredibly generous person.

EMILY’s List superstar, Congresswoman Gwen Moore of Wisconsin recently visited Rockford, IL to lend a helping hand to her EMILY’s List sister, Cheri Bustos, who is running for Congress in Illinois’s 17th district.

EMILY’s List candidate Tammy Duckworth (IL-08) piloted a Black Hawk helicopter when it was hit with a rocket-propelled grenade in Iraq. She lost both her legs and part of her arm in the blast, but she landed the helicopter successfully. Val Demings (FL-08) was the daughter of a janitor who grew up to be Orlando’s first-ever female Chief of Police. While she was chief, the city’s violent crime rate dropped by 40 percent.
