Giffords to Attend Event In Washington, DC in Support of Pro-choice Democratic Women's Organization

WASHINGTON D.C. - EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, announced today that Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords will receive the organization’s annual “We Are EMILY” award, which recognizes women who have changed the face of political power and provided leadership and inspiration to the EMILY’s List community – more than one million members strong – and beyond.

WASHINGTON D.C. - EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, released the following video to be screened tonight at the “We Are EMILY” Awards event tonight in downtown Washington. The event marks Giffords’ first return to Washington, DC since her resignation in January.

The video is narrated by Giffords’ close friend and former colleague, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand.

WASHINGTON, D.C. EMILY's List, the nation's largest grassroots political network and financial resource for women running for elected office, today announced its endorsement of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (AZ-08), Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter (NH-01) and Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand (NY-20). The 2006 victories of these pro-choice, Democratic women were critical to secure Democratic control of the Congress and helped make Nancy Pelosi the first woman Speaker of the House.

It was a historic election night for EMILY's List candidates. EMILY's List helped defeat Republicans and elect more pro-choice Democratic women than in any year since 1992. EMILY's List candidates ousted two Republican senators in nasty, expensive races and won the two most competitive governors races in the country. We added at least 11 new Democratic women to the U.S. House, and possibly as many as 13.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Cong. Gabrielle Giffords and other victims of this senseless and violent act. Gabby is a pioneer, a tenacious fighter, and a true friend.
