Earlier this week, I had the delight of joining the EMILY’s List community gathered in D.C. to celebrate what is shaping up to be a historic year for women in politics -- with half the senate women up for re-election, and strong challengers and candidates for open seats -- this is the most Democratic women we’ve seen running for the senate, ever.

Interesting news in the New York Senate race, where some GOPers are publicly pushing for former NYC Mayor (and presidential nominee) Rudy Giuliani to throw his hat in the ring.

EMILY's List candidate Kirsten Gillibrand was appointed to fill the seat of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in January. She's facing her first statewide election in 2010 to keep the seat in Democratic hands.

From months of campaigning with the support of EMILY’s List, to winning her first statewide election last week, all the while fighting on behalf of her 19.5 million constituents, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand never skips a beat. Regardless of what’s happening in Washington, her priority has always been ensuring that all Americans are protected, both at home and abroad. This week she journeyed to Afghanistan and Pakistan to visit troops, meet with leaders, and see firsthand the progress we’ve made over there.

Kirsten, who's been hard at work touring all 62 counties in New York and leading the way for the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell, shared behind-the-scenes photos from her last few months on the road. From playing in the snow with her family to joining Lt. Dan Choi to fight for equality, these photos offer just a glimpse of what keeps Kirsten busy (to say the least!).

Emily Wales
October 9, 2009

At EMILY's List, we believe that electing women to office is critical for creating a more representative, progressive democracy. And with women at the table, our issues are a top priority.

This week, that couldn't have been clearer.

EMILY's List women of the Senate took center stage this week, speaking about the essential ways in which health care reform will benefit the country's women. From the House floor to Larry King Live, these women senators spoke out for women across America, describing the obstacles to care many women face.
