This afternoon, Assemblywoman Karen Bass (D-Los Angeles) was sworn in as the 67th Speaker of the California Assembly – the first African American woman to serve as Speaker of any state Assembly and the first Democratic woman to hold this prestigious role in California. EMILY’s List members were pleased to support Bass in her first race in 2004 through our Political Opportunity Program, as she began charting her path to leadership.

There's no doubt we face challenges as the 112th Congress convenes, but there is also reason for celebration. All of you helped elect a strong group of pro-choice Democratic women to fight for us, including four new women of color in the House, and it was a thrill to have them sworn in yesterday.

My few hours spent with our elected women reminded me of the long hours and dedication of our public servants. My feet could barely keep up with the pace at which these women move -- and today was just day one.

In a landslide victory, Speaker Emeritus Karen Bass won the Democratic nomination, edging out 3 male contenders. Bass is now the leading candidate in CA-33, a race to replace retiring EMILY's List Cong. Diane Watson.
