Election 2008

In the Field: New Hampshire Updates from WOMEN VOTE!

Live Free. Vote Democratic.

This week, the WOMEN VOTE! program is launching one of its massive get-out-the-vote efforts in the battleground state of New Hampshire to elect Barack Obama, U.S. Senate candidate Jeanne Shaheen, Rep. Carol Shea-Porter, and Democratic Gov. John Lynch.

With the high voter turnout expected on election day -- and because New Hampshire allows voters to register as late as election day -- it is crucial that we get the Democratic message to as many New Hampshire residents as possible.

With volunteers, interns, and staff members, EMILY's List is launching a major canvassing effort across New Hampshire to reach voters in these final days.

Hear straight from some of the EMILY's List team about what they expect to accomplish in New Hampshire -- and their hopes for changing the face of politics in America on November 4.

Left for New Hampshire Friday, October 31: Today, we are heading to New Hampshire to help in the final days of this historic election. Over the next five days, EMILY's list staff, interns and volunteers are going to blanket New Hampshire to get out the vote for Barack Obama, Jeanne Shaheen for Senate, and Carol Shea-Porter for Congress. These women stand for what we believe in and we are so excited to not only stand alongside them as their races come to an end, but to knock on doors, make phone calls and get the word out about why they will change the face of Washington. Many of us have been involved in this cycle since the beginning, and doing everything we can to help secure these two vital seats in such an important state will mark the culmination of a lot of hard work and a historic shift towards bringing about the change this country so desperately needs.

Helping organize volunteers in New Hampshire: Since we landed in Manchester on Monday morning, we have been traversing the state of New Hampshire, picking up supplies, copying documents, and organizing information packets to prepare for the GOTV weekend. We have also been cooperating closely with the America Votes office in Concord, NH, working with other progressive partner organizations, such as SEIU and Planned Parenthood, to make sure as many New Hampshire voters as possible hear our message. In order to reach the New Hampshire Women Vote! GOTV goal of knocking on 15,000 doors, we have coordinated with America Votes to obtain all of our “turf” materials, including detailed maps and voter information.

While traveling the Granite State, we have felt the election excitement pulsating through this truly independent toss-up state. The campaign signs are almost as vibrant and plentiful as the autumn leaves. From the retired music teacher, who once taught at an African-American prep school at the onset of the Civil Rights Movement and now volunteers at the America Votes office with his wife, to the bar manager in Concord, who travels to Manchester at night to do data entry at the Obama New Hampshire headquarters, this election has invigorated the state.

Our Plans for Change

From talking with voters to doing visibility on election day, we're hard at work to make sure people get to the polls.
