About Dina Titus

A Democratic trending district

In 2008, Democrats saw an outstanding opportunity to seize a Republican-held House seat in Nevada’s third congressional district. Then-state Sen. Dina Titus, one of the state’s most respected political leaders and Nevada's Senate Democratic minority leader for 15 years, took on GOP Cong. Jon Porter, winning a tough challenger race. Although Titus' victory proves this swing state is ready for change, Republicans are eager to win back this seat -- and that means they're making Titus one of their top targets for 2010.

Proven Democratic leader

Titus is known for her independent leadership and her strong moral compass -- strengthening schools, preserving the environment, and protecting the welfare of Nevada's citizens. Titus is also an outspoken defender of reproductive rights, sponsoring legislation requiring Nevada to cover contraception in employees’ health care plans and requiring insurance companies to cover the HPV vaccine. In Congress, she has been named to key committees, including Homeland Security, and Education and Labor, where her background as a lifelong educator has made her a valuable new addition.

A distinctive voice for Nevadans

Titus is an institution in Nevada politics, having taught many of the policymakers she’s served with. Like many Nevadans, she was not born in the state; a Georgia native, she’s never lost her southern accent. As Las Vegas Review-Journal reporter Erin Neff once wrote, Titus “doesn’t just have the most distinctive accent in Nevada politics; hers is arguably its most unique voice.” But Republicans are set on replacing her voice in Congress with one of their own -- and she's going to have to fight off Republican attacks to get her message out to voters and hold on to her seat.

Titus votes to extend unemployment benefits and first-time homebuyer tax credit

Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevada’s Third District voted today in support of important legislation that extends both unemployment benefits for Southern Nevadans during this tough economic time and the first-time homebuyer tax credit which has given a boost to Nevada’s struggling housing market.

“With Nevada’s unemployment at record levels, it is critical that we continue to make job creation a top priority,” Congresswoman Titus said. “But while we work to bring good jobs to Southern Nevada, extending unemployment benefits will help people ride out this economic storm, and for many families it can make the difference between losing a home to foreclosure and getting back on their feet. A vital component to our economic recovery is ending the foreclosure crisis that has swept Nevada. The first-time homebuyer tax credit included in the Recovery Act’s largest package of tax cuts in history, has helped stimulate Southern Nevada’s housing market and this important extension will further boost its effects.”

Titus voices support for health care reform bill

Rep. Dina Titus says she'll support health insurance reform proposed in the House of Representatives, the third member of Nevada's five-person congressional delegation to support reform bills.

House Resolution 3962 "takes important steps to make health insurance more affordable and accessible," the Nevada Democrat said in a statement.

In July Titus voted against a version of reform presented to the House Education and Labor Committee, in part because a surtax would have been applied to individuals making $280,000 or more and families making $350,000 or more, to pay for it, she said.

Dina Titus to host health care town hall meeting

Democratic Rep. Dina Titus will do this week what most Nevada lawmakers ably avoided during the long hot summer of Tea Party protests: She will host an open town hall forum on health care on Monday.

The freshmen congresswoman had publicly promised her constituents in August that she would return to her Southern Nevada district in fall with a full-fledged forum.
