About Alex Sink

Putting a Democrat in charge in Florida

When GOP Gov. Charlie Crist announced he’d run for Senate, Democrats united behind Alex Sink, Florida’s chief financial officer, to take over the governor’s mansion in this critical battleground state. Sink became Florida’s first female chief financial officer in 2006 with support from EMILY’s List’s Political Opportunity Program. If she succeeds, she will be Florida’s first woman governor.

Fiscal expertise, proven leadership

Alex Sink has the business savvy and leadership skills to restore vibrancy to Florida’s economy. An innovative chief financial officer, Sink directed investment managers to assess the impact of global warming on the state’s investment portfolio -- safeguarding tax dollars from risk and serving as a model for other states. She is a courageous and outspoken leader who has repeatedly stood up for a woman’s right to choose.

Republican relic of the Reagan revolution

Leading Republican candidate state Attorney General and former Washington lobbyist Bill McCollum is a 20-year veteran of the U.S. House and loyal member of Newt Gingrich’s army. He earned perfect scores from the National Right to Life Committee for his opposition to reproductive freedom. Alex Sink needs immediate support from EMILY’s List members to build a campaign war chest that can overcome McCollum's deep connections to special interests.

Sink backs adoption by gays, lesbians

Alex Sink, Florida's chief financial officer and the leading Democratic candidate for governor, told the state's largest gay rights group Sunday that homosexuals should be allowed to adopt if it's in the children's "best interest.'' Florida is the only state with an outright ban on adoption by lesbians and gay men. Sink said it should be up to a judge to determine whether it's in a child's best interest to be adopted, on a case-by-case basis.

CFO Sink Encourages Floridians to Learn More About Senior Protection During National Caregivers Month

Florida CFO Alex Sink today encouraged Floridians to recognize National Family Caregivers Month by learning more about protecting seniors from financial fraud. Citizens can get more information either by logging on to www.FLseniors.net or by attending one of CFO Sink’s Safeguard Our Seniors forums being held this month around the state by her Department of Financial Services.

“National Caregivers Month is an important opportunity to recognize the family members, friends and caregivers who care for and advocate on behalf of Florida seniors,” said CFO Sink. “Eighty percent of long-term care is provided by family or friends, and we all owe a debt of gratitude to those caregivers who give their own time and resources to benefit the lives of others.”

Sink giving her party new hope

About 3,000 Florida Democrats are gathered in Orlando this weekend to prepare for an election year they hope will bring the return of Democratic political power in the state.

Their optimism centers on Alex Sink of Tampa, who Democrats think can win them the governor's seat for the first time since 1994.

"I'm here tonight with a simple message ... for anyone who thinks there's a sign on the door of the governor's office that reads, 'Democrats need not apply,'" she told the crowd. "It doesn't have to be that way."
