Record of service

Richardson has an impressive record of service on the local, state, and federal levels. Before becoming a member of the U.S. House, she served as a Long Beach City councilwoman and member of the California Assembly, where she became the first African American woman to serve as the Assembly's assistant pro tempore.

Progressive voice

In Congress, Richardson has been a strong advocate for progressive causes, including increased health care access and improved education. A member of the Homeland Security Committee, she has supported efforts to withdraw U.S. troops in Iraq and increase diplomacy efforts abroad.

On the Waterfront: Richardson bill could free up $5 billion for ports

As promised during a recent visit here, Congresswoman Laura Richardson has introduced a bill that could free up some $5 billion meant for harbor upkeep but routinely hoarded by the federal government for other uses.

The legislation, known as the Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund Reform Act, closes loopholes that have allowed federal authorities to stockpile some $5 billion in tax revenue meant for projects like dredging and routine maintenance of the nation's seaports.
