About Ann Kirkpatrick

A successful challenger race

Experienced legislator Ann Kirkpatrick needed a massive campaign fund to take over this Republican-held district in 2008. Ranked as one of Democrats' top pick-up opportunities, Kirkpatrick mobilized her supporters and, with the help of EMILY's List members, soundly defeated her GOP opponent. But Republicans have made Kirkpatrick a target from day one, and they're willing to pull out all the stops to take back this seat in 2010.

A self-made progressive leader

Born and raised among the Apache, Ann Kirkpatrick worked her way through law school and was the first woman deputy county attorney in Coconino. An Arizona native, Kirkpatrick is working to improve the challenges facing her district, where unemployment is high, wages are low, and access to education and health care is limited. Serving Arizona citizens in a variety of positions, Kirkpatrick has made a name for herself as a principled legislator with a strong record on ethics.

A GOP 2010 target

In Congress, Ann has been a leader on veteran's issues, revitalizing the economy, and improving the lives of Arizonians. Although she's hit the ground running in Washington, Republicans know that her first re-election will be critical -- and they're determined to make sure they put this seat back in the GOP's column. Kirkpatrick has been named a top Republican target for 2010, and her victory will be crucial for protecting Democrats' majority in the House and for continued progress for Arizona citizens.

Health plan passes

In a victory for President Barack Obama, the Democratic-controlled House narrowly passed landmark health care legislation Saturday night to expand coverage to tens of millions who lack it and place tough new restrictions on the insurance industry. Republican opposition was nearly unanimous.

The 220-215 vote cleared the way for the Senate to begin debate on the issue that has come to overshadow all others in Congress. U.S. Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick, D-Flagstaff, voted for the bill.

Kirkpatrick touts cost-cutting record during phone town hall

U.S. Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick offered constituents several examples Tuesday of how she is trying to be fiscally conservative with taxpayer money.

She fielded 19 questions from callers throughout the sprawling 1st Congressional District during the first of four "tele-town halls" focusing on specific topics.

This tele-town hall focused on how to rein in federal spending and Kirkpatrick didn't hear anyone say Congress should spend more, although several people wanted the government to help create more jobs.
