About Chris Gregoire

A re-election win

Since her 2004 victory, Republicans bitter over the loss repeatedly attacked Gregoire’s work and targeted her 2008 re-election bid as a prime pickup opportunity. But Gregoire was ready for another fierce fight, and with EMILY's List behind her, she came out on top in a tough election to secure a second term as governor.

An impressive record

Gregoire has made education the cornerstone of her agenda, dramatically increasing funding, strengthening public schools, and making higher education more affordable. She also lobbied the legislature to approve a constitutional amendment for a “rainy day” fund -- all without cutting vital social services.

Leading the way

According to the AP, Gregoire has made "a career of shattering glass ceilings." She was elected to three terms as attorney general, the first woman in state history to hold the office. Washington is the first and only state in the nation where women hold both U.S. Senate seats and the governorship. All three women are pro-choice Democrats elected with the support of EMILY's List.
