Obama makes history
On Wednesday, Senator Barack Obama was nominated to be the Democrat's presidential candidate by acclamation. Obama makes history by being the first African-American running on a major party ticket. Democrats rallied Wednesday night during speeches by former President Bill Clinton, Vice Presedential nominee Senator Joe Biden and a surprise appearance by Obama himself.

Clinton's call for unity resonates with party
Sen. Hillary Clinton's featured speech at the Democratic Convention left listeners with one key message: "No way, no how, no McCain," Clinton said. "Barack Obama is my president." Challenging her supporters to "unite as a single party with a single purpose," Clinton spoke of the importance of electing Obama to the White House and addressing key issues such as the economy, the war in Iraq, and health care.

Ledbetter message resonates with women
After being discriminated against at a Goodyear plant, Lilly Ledbetter took her case all the way to the Supreme Court -- and lost. Ledbetter has become a national figure in the fight for equal pay, and her speech at the Democratic National Convention Tuesday resonated with supporters. "Equal pay for equal work is a fundamental American principle," Ledbetter said. "We need leaders in this country who will fight for it."

New EMILY's List study shows Obama up 12 points among women
The newly released 2008 Women's Monitor shows Barack Obama leading John McCain by 12 points among women, with the largest lead among young voters. The study also highlights an enthusiasm gap among women in different age groups. "We have an important task, as you can see from this data, of reaching out to these Gen Y voters and these first-time voters and saying, 'It's not enough just to vote for Barack Obama,' " Ellen R. Opening day of the DNC's Women's Caucus shares the calendar with Women's Equality Day

Obama has the women's vote
At yesterday's National Journal event, Obama's perceived issue with women voters was a main topic. EMILY's List President, Ellen R. Malcolm presented the findings of the 2008 Women's Monitor, showing that Obama's support among women surpasses both John Kerry and Al Gore. Other speakers also pointed out that Obama's support among women will most likely grow as McCain's positions on family planning and abortion become better known.
