About Judy Chu

A special election opportunity

Cong. Hilda Solis’s selection as U.S. secretary of labor creates an immediate opportunity to elect Dr. Judy Chu to Congress from California’s 32nd district. Vice chair of the state board of equalization, Chu is a 23-year veteran of state and local government, having served on the Garvey School District school board, on the Monterey Park City Council, as Monterey Park mayor, and three terms in the state Assembly before winning her post in 2006.

A dedicated progressive with broad support

A dedicated progressive, Chu has fought to expand health insurance for children, close tax loopholes for offshore corporations, and protect the civil rights of gay and lesbian citizens. Chu consistently earned perfect approval ratings from Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California for her record in the Assembly on reproductive rights and women’s health. Chu also has a deep reservoir of support in this community, and is known for her skill at building coalitions that represent its rich ethnic diversity.

A short election timeline

Chu moved quickly to lock up support and put together a winning campaign in this spring special election. She secured endorsements from the Feminist Majority PAC and prominent members of the California congressional delegation. A friend to labor, Chu has been endorsed by the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, SEIU, and the Teamsters.

Cutting her own path

Judy Chu was sitting down on Dec. 18 to what she describes as “a nice, quiet breakfast” at her desk at the California Board of Equalization when word spread that President-elect Barack Obama would nominate Rep. Hilda Solis (D-Calif.) to be Labor secretary.

Chu, a political veteran from Solis’s district, had an immediate, almost reflexive reaction.

“It dawned on me that it was possible to run for Congress,” she recounts.

Democrat Chu wins California House special election

Democrat Judy Chu easily won Tuesday’s special election to fill the vacant House seat in California’s 32nd District, where her party holds a lopsided political advantage. Chu, an elected member of the state tax commission, will now head to Washington to succeed Hilda L. Solis.

Chu had 62 percent of the vote with all precincts reporting in the low-turnout election, according to local and state election office Web sites. She enjoyed a wide lead over Republican Betty Chu,, who had 33 percent, and Libertarian Chris Agrella, who had 5 percent.

The outcome justified Judy Chu’s status throughout the general election campaign as a heavy favorite to fill the 32nd District seat, located east of downtown Los Angeles.
