EMILY's List candidate Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz publicly announced for the first time that she has been battling breast cancer, and that now after seven surgeries and a year of treatment she can call herself a breast cancer survivor.

Diagnosed at the young age of 41 with three children under the age of 10 and a full Congressional schedule, Debbie did not want her struggle to become the focus of her life or her work. She planned her surgeries around sessions of Congress and didn't miss a day of work.

Now, the focus of her work has turned to preventing this struggle for other young women. Debbie introduced the Education and Awareness Requires Learning Young Act of 2009, or the EARLY Act, which will focus on promoting early detection of breast cancer and educating women on how to help lower their chances of developing cancer.
