EMILY's List's WOMEN VOTE! To Mobilize Voters in Alabama
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- EMILY's List, the nation's largest resource for women candidates, today announced a new WOMEN VOTE! project in Alabama's seventh congressional district. As the nationwide voter mobilization and education project of EMILY's List, WOMEN VOTE! will reach out to key voters in Alabama's seventh district to get out the vote and get women to the polls for the July 13th runoff election.
The Alabama WOMEN VOTE! program will canvass households throughout the Birmingham and Selma areas starting next week and through the July 13th run-off election. The program will target African-American women and senior voters with a history of voting in Democratic primaries and seek to educate them about Terri Sewell's background of hard work and achievement that led her to receive 37 percent of the vote in a four-candidate field in the primary election and to mobilize them to get out the vote for her in the run-off.
"Terri Sewell is a new voice for the 7th district -- not a career politician, but a daughter of the district who gets things done," said Denise Feriozzi, Director of EMILY’s List WOMEN VOTE! "Sewell broke away from the pack and came in first in her primary last month, but the campaign to get her to Congress is not over. Terri needs the grassroots support she has organized to come out for her again and to vote in the runoff on July 13th. Terri is the candidate who will work with President Obama to bring jobs to Alabama, who will fight for women and families across the state and who will break barriers by becoming the first African American women elected to the House from Alabama. We hope that through our canvassing efforts we will ensure that Terri can stand up for Alabama in the U.S. House of Representatives."
Launched in 1995, the historic EMILY's List WOMEN VOTE! project combines polling and research, advanced information technology, sophisticated message testing, and precinct-by-precinct field work to mobilize millions of women voters across the country. EMILY's List designed WOMEN VOTE! to build a progressive political base that will elect more Democrats, especially women, by helping to increase turnout among women voters year after year.
EMILY's List is the nation's largest resource for women in politics. In the 2007-2008 cycle, EMILY's List raised more than $43 million to support its mission of recruiting and supporting women candidates, helping them build strong campaigns, and mobilizing women voters to turn out and vote. Since its founding in 1985, EMILY's List has worked to elect 80 pro-choice Democratic women to the U.S. House, 15 to the U.S. Senate, nine governors, and hundreds of women to the state legislatures, state constitutional offices, and other key local offices.
