EMILY's List Endorses Frederica Wilson for Florida's Seventeenth Congressional District

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- EMILY's List, the nation's largest resource for women candidates, today announced its endorsement of Frederica Wilson for Florida's seventeenth congressional district.

"EMILY's List is proud to endorse Frederica Wilson for U.S. Congress," said Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILY's List. "Frederica will be a strong and independent voice and will fight for her constituents. She has a deep understanding of the needs of the 17th district having served much of the area as a state representative and state senator. Her record of fighting for jobs, small business and education reforms make her the right choice for Florida. EMILY's List looks forward to supporting Frederica in her campaign for Congress."

A lifelong public servant, Frederica has served her community as a teacher, principal, school board member, and has represented Florida in both the state House and state Senate. In 1992 Wilson founded the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Program, which has become a national model for drop-out prevention programs and its foundation has awarded more than $5 million dollars in scholarships.

As a state legislator, Senator Wilson has been a vigilant supporter of quality public education. Her tenure in Tallahassee has been recognized both for her effectiveness and her ability to work across party lines. She worked with then-Governor Jeb Bush to remove the Confederate flag from the state capitol, to start HIV/AIDS testing in prisons and she received the Florida Association of School Administrators’ Legislator of the Year award in 2007.

EMILY's List is the nation's largest resource for women candidates. In the 2007-2008 cycle, EMILY's List raised more than $43 million to support its mission of recruiting and supporting women candidates, helping them build strong campaigns, and mobilizing women voters to turn out and vote. Since its founding in 1985, EMILY's List has worked to elect 80 pro-choice Democratic women to the U.S. House, 15 to the U.S. Senate, nine governors, and hundreds of women to the state legislatures, state constitutional offices, and other key local offices.
