Tommy Thompson: Bad for Wisconsin, Bad for Women

WASHINGTON D.C. -- Today, EMILY's List President Stephanie Schriock released the following statement on Tommy Thompson's announcement of his candidacy for U.S. Senate from Wisconsin.

"Tommy Thompson has proven he won't stand up for women and families in Wisconsin," said Stephanie Schriock President of EMILY's List. "Today he joins a Republican primary where his dangerously out-of-touch priorities will be right at home. From Thompson's term as Governor to his tenure in the Bush White House, he has proved time and again that he cares more about a backwards looking agenda than about the rights or health of women in Wisconsin. Thompson has signed some of the most draconian anti-choice laws in the country and advocated for allowing health insurance companies to discriminate against women. When Wisconsin women and men stood up against Scott Walker and his anti-family agenda, Tommy Thompson stood on the other side, supporting Walker's plan to gut schools, cut funding for health care for seniors, and raise taxes on working families. Wisconsin families have been through enough -- the last thing they need is another corporate crony in Washington."

In the 2009-2010 cycle, EMILY's List raised more than $38.5 million to support its mission of recruiting and supporting women candidates, helping them build strong campaigns, and mobilizing women voters to turn out and vote. With a community of more than 900,000 members across the country, EMILY's List is one of the largest political action committees in the nation. Since its founding in 1985, EMILY's List has worked to elect 86 pro-choice Democratic women to the U.S. House, 16 to the U.S. Senate, nine governors, and hundreds of women to the state legislatures, state constitutional offices, and other key local offices. In the 2009-2010 cycle, EMILY's List had the largest number of members and donors in our 25 year history.
