EMILY's List Congratulates Terri Sewell in Alabama's Seventh Congressional District
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- EMILY's List, the nation's largest resource for women candidates, congratulates Terri Sewell on winning the most votes in today's Democratic primary and looks forward to Sewell's victory in the July run-off election.
"A political outsider with a fresh perspective that inspired Alabama voters, Terri Sewell overcame a huge deficit in the polls to secure the largest number of votes today. She overcame two primary opponents who had strong name identification, proving not only that she is the best candidate in the race, but also that she is ready to take on the Republican nominee in November," said Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILY's List. "We are confident that she will continue to build on this momentum, win the Democratic nomination in July, and go on to win again this fall and be a strong voice in Congress for Alabama families."
As a successful attorney and community leader, Terri has dedicated herself to making life better for all Alabamians. She worked with Alabama's historically black colleges and universities to finance campus improvements and served as the first co-chair of the Women's Fund "Voices Against Violence" campaign to fight domestic violence in Birmingham. As a candidate, she's focused her campaign on economic development and education, working to create jobs and opportunity for hard-working Alabama families and to strengthen schools to ensure that every student is graduating from high school prepared to succeed.
Terri Sewell began breaking barriers at a young age. She was the first African American valedictorian of her high school and the first African American female to make partner at the Birmingham law firm where she currently works. Now, she's poised for another "first": the first African American woman elected to Congress from Alabama.
EMILY's List is the nation's largest resource for women candidates. In the 2007-2008 cycle, EMILY's List raised more than $43 million to support its mission of recruiting and supporting women candidates, helping them build strong campaigns, and mobilizing women voters to turn out and vote. Since its founding in 1985, EMILY's List has worked to elect 80 pro-choice Democratic women to the U.S. House, 15 to the U.S. Senate, nine governors, and hundreds of women to the state legislatures, state constitutional offices, and other key local offices.
