EMILY's List Endorses Libby Mitchell for Governor of Maine

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- EMILY's List, the nation's largest resource for women in politics, today announced its endorsement of Libby Mitchell for Governor of Maine.

"EMILY's List is proud to endorse Libby Mitchell for Governor of Maine," said Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILY's List. "During her time in the legislature, Libby was able to bring Republicans and Democrats together to help working families and small businesses, expand Head Start, and move Maine towards a more sustainable future. We are excited to endorse Libby Mitchell are looking forward to help elect her the first woman governor of Maine."

Libby Mitchell has spent her entire life in public service. In the state legislature, she served nine terms in the House and three in the Senate. A true pioneer, Libby was the first woman in America elected to serve both as speaker of the state House and then as president of the state Senate, a time in Maine that was marked by unparalleled bipartisanship and cooperation. Now, Mitchell seeks to build upon this legacy by serving as Maine’s first female governor.

"2010 is an extraordinary opportunity for women leaders at the state level," said Schriock. "Libby Mitchell joins Diane Denish of New Mexico, Margaret Anderson Kelliher of Minnesota, Deb Markowitz of Vermont, and Alex Sink of Florida, all fantastic, strong and proven leaders who are running for governor in open seat races across the country. These women stand for putting families first, not corporations; for making it easier for small businesses to thrive; for protecting their environment; and for leading with integrity and the determination to get things done. At a time when voters feel dissatisfied, these women have track records of proving that government can work for American women and their families."

In 2002, EMILY’s List helped to elect three pro-choice Democratic women governors -- Janet Napolitano, Kathleen Sebelius and Jennifer Granholm. In 2008, two pro-choice Democratic women were elected to lead their states – Christine Gregoire was re-elected to serve Washington and Bev Perdue was elected for her first term in North Carolina. Electing five new pro-choice Democratic women to the top statewide executive office will be the largest number ever elected in a cycle to hold that office. We look forward to making history in November with these dynamic women leaders.

EMILY's List is the nation's largest resource for women candidates. In the 2007-2008 cycle, EMILY's List raised more than $43 million to support its mission of recruiting and supporting women candidates, helping them build strong campaigns, and mobilizing women voters to turn out and vote. Since its founding in 1985, EMILY's List has worked to elect 80 pro-choice Democratic women to the U.S. House, 15 to the U.S. Senate, nine governors, and hundreds of women to the state legislatures, state constitutional offices, and other key local offices.
