EMILY's List Announces Endorsement of Elaine Marshall for Senator from North Carolina

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- EMILY's List, the nation's largest resource for women in politics, today announced its endorsement of Elaine Marshall for United State Senate in North Carolina to unseat Senator Richard Burr.

"EMILY's List would like to congratulate Elaine for winning the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate in North Carolina," said Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILY's List. "A dedicated public servant, Elaine has devoted her life to fighting for those without a voice, from standing up to Wall Street in defense of small business owners to requiring health insurance companies to cover Pap smears and mammograms. EMILY's List is proud to endorse Elaine, and we look forward to helping her in her campaign to defeat Senator Burr in November and continue her hard work in Washington."

"Elaine has a history of winning tough state-wide races," Schriock continued. "When Elaine first ran for secretary of state in 1996, she defeated NASCAR legend Richard Petty. The North Carolina political establishment considered him unbeatable, but Elaine won anyway and went on to become the first woman to hold a state-wide executive office in North Carolina. We are sure that with the support of thousands of North Carolinians, Elaine can defeat Richard Burr this fall."

A dedicated public servant, Elaine has for years been a forceful advocate for women, families and small business. As secretary of state, Elaine took on Wall Street, protecting North Carolina investors and foundations from corporate abuses and recovering over $500 million in fraud. Back home, she fought to clean up Raleigh by reforming North Carolina’s ethics laws.

"I am incredibly honored to receive the EMILY’s List endorsement," said Marshall. "In Richard Burr, North Carolinians have a senator who consistently sides with Wall Street, insurance companies and Big Oil instead of the people he is elected to represent. We are pleased to have EMILY’s List join our fight to give the people of North Carolina a strong voice in Washington."

EMILY's List is the nation's largest resource for women candidates. In the 2007-2008 cycle, EMILY's List raised more than $43 million to support its mission of recruiting and supporting women candidates, helping them build strong campaigns, and mobilizing women voters to turn out and vote. Since its founding in 1985, EMILY's List has worked to elect 80 pro-choice Democratic women to the U.S. House, 15 to the U.S. Senate, nine governors, and hundreds of women to the state legislatures, state constitutional offices, and other key local offices.
