EMILY's List Launches EMpower
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- EMILY's List, the nation's largest resource for women in politics, today announced the launch of EMpower, a new program to engage younger women and men across the country to connect and elect more pro-choice Democratic women to office.
"Twenty-five years ago, Ellen Malcolm and a group of friends took out their rolodexes and built a community that has changed the face of politics," said Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILY's List. "Today, the tools are different, but the urgency and opportunity are the same. EMpower is a new opportunity to be a part of our movement to elect strong Democratic women; a place to network, to learn about candidates throughout the country, to collaborate and have a powerful individual and collective impact in cities, states, and in Washington."
"EMpower is as dynamic as the world we're living in now," Schriock continued. "It tears down the walls between activists who want to elect women and the women they elect, by connecting them through on-line networking, in-person meetings, and other opportunities. EMpower opens doors -- members can talk strategy together as well as with the top leaders of campaigns across the country. They can tell us who in their classroom, their law firm, their gym, or their book club would make an incredible candidate – and help us ask those women to run."
"The need for strong pro-choice Democratic women has never been more urgent. In Governor's mansions, in Congress and on the Senate floor, Democratic women are the leaders we need to affect change and ensure that conservative policies championed by the likes of Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann and Carly Fiorina do not erode rights that are fundamental to American women and their families and to our freedom."
Members of EMpower will have the opportunity to meet candidates and elected officials, and stay engaged through our interactive website and EMpower events across the country throughout the year. They will help elect new women to office, like working mom Julie Lassa in Wisconsin and history-making Terri Sewell, who would be the first African-American woman elected to congress from Alabama.
For the 2010 election, individuals must contribute $100 to EMILY's List and two $50 checks to EMILY's List candidates of their choice to become members of EMpower. Every individual that signs up and contributes $100 to EMILY's List on June 17th will be considered a part of the EM Club, the founding members of EMpower.
EMILY's List is the nation's largest resource for women in politics. In the 2007-2008 cycle, EMILY's List raised more than $43 million to support its mission of recruiting and supporting women candidates, helping them build strong campaigns, and mobilizing women voters to turn out and vote. Since its founding in 1985, EMILY's List has worked to elect 80 pro-choice Democratic women to the U.S. House, 15 to the U.S. Senate, nine governors, and hundreds of women to the state legislatures, state constitutional offices, and other key local offices.
