EMILY's List Endorses Tammy Baldwin for the United States Senate
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- EMILY's List, the nation's largest resource for women in politics, today announced its endorsement of Tammy Baldwin for U.S. Senator of Wisconsin.
"Tammy Baldwin has been a champion of progressive values and a strong voice for women and families in the House of Representatives. Since taking office in 1999, Tammy has been an EMILY's List hero and our community of almost 1 million members has been looking forward to this race for a long time," said Stephanie Schriock, President of EMILY's List.
"She was the first woman from Wisconsin elected to Congress, with the help of our members, and can expect a groundswell of support from our community as she campaigns to become the first female Senator from Wisconsin. In office Tammy has consistently stood up for the middle class, supporting small businesses, infrastructure development and alternative energy advancement. We are looking forward to bringing a candidate with Tammy's courage, compassion and leadership to the Senate. I know I speak for the entire EMILY's List community when I say how thrilled we are to endorse Tammy in her campaign for the United States Senate."
Tammy Baldwin has been a Representative for Wisconsin's second district since 1999 and is currently serving in her seventh term. She made history as the first woman from Wisconsin elected to the House and the first non-incumbent openly gay person to be elected to Congress. Prior to her election to Congress she served in the Wisconsin State House from 1993-1999. In 2008 she co-founded the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Caucus in the House of Representatives. If elected, Baldwin would become the first female Senator elected from Wisconsin and the first openly gay candidate elected to the upper chamber.
EMILY's List supported Baldwin in her past campaigns for the U.S. House of Representatives.
In the 2009-2010 cycle, EMILY's List raised more than $38.5 million to support its mission of recruiting and supporting women candidates, helping them build strong campaigns, and mobilizing women voters to turn out and vote. With a community of more than 900,000 members across the country, EMILY's List is one of the largest political action committees in the nation. Since its founding in 1985, EMILY's List has worked to elect 86 pro-choice Democratic women to the U.S. House, 16 to the U.S. Senate, nine governors, and hundreds of women to the state legislatures, state constitutional offices, and other key local offices. In the 2009-2010 cycle, EMILY's List had the largest number of members and donors in our 25 year history.
