EMILY’s List Endorses Natalie Tennant for Governor in West Virginia
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- EMILY's List, the nation's largest resource for women in politics, today announced its endorsement of Natalie Tennant for Governor in West Virginia.
"Natalie is a lifelong trailblazer with deep roots in West Virginia," said Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILY's List. "As a student at West Virginia University, Natalie became the first female mountaineer mascot. When other students told Natalie to 'go back to the kitchen,' she didn't back down. She went on to become the state's first Democratic woman Secretary of State. In office she has dedicated herself to government transparency and efficiency. In a crowded primary field with five male competitors, Natalie emerges as an innovator pioneering change for the citizens of West Virginia. She is a proven advocate, effective leader, and will make an excellent first woman governor for West Virginia. EMILY's List is proud to endorse Natalie Tennant for Governor."
Tennant is a former TV news anchor, small business owner, and the first Democratic woman Secretary of State in West Virginia. While in office she has streamlined services and cut red tape to help West Virginia small businesses. Tennant spearheaded an award-winning pilot project to ensure secure online voting for deployed men and women in uniform. Under Tennant's leadership, West Virginia has become a worldwide leader in safe online voting.
Tennant is a Board Member of Susan G. Komen for the Cure and The American Heart Association. She lives in Charleston with her husband and their daughter.
EMILY's List previously endorsed Tennant in her election for Secretary of State through the Political Opportunity Program.
In the 2009-2010 cycle, EMILY's List raised more than $38.5 million to support its mission of recruiting and supporting women candidates, helping them build strong campaigns, and mobilizing women voters to turn out and vote. With a community of more than 600,000 members across the country, EMILY's List is one of the largest political action committees in the nation. Since its founding in 1985, EMILY's List has worked to elect 84 pro-choice Democratic women to the U.S. House, 16 to the U.S. Senate, nine governors, and hundreds of women to the state legislatures, state constitutional offices, and other key local offices. In the 2009-2010 cycle, EMILY's List had the largest number of members and donors in our 25 year history.
