EMILY's List Endorses 5 In Wisconsin Recall
Announces Significant Media Campaign To Replace Anti-family Republicans With Democratic Women
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, EMILY's List, the nation's largest resource for women in politics, announced their entrance into the fight to recall six Republican State Senators, overturn control of the legislature, and stop the radical anti-family agenda currently being pursued by Republican Governor Scott Walker in Wisconsin.
Because of the exponential growth in the EMILY's List community over the last year, we are able to fight against the Republican war on women and their families on multiple fronts in 2011.
After an upset victory in the special election of Kathy Hochul in NY-26, EMILY's List endorsed Janice Hahn in her campaign in CA-36 against Craig Huey, one of the most anti-woman Republicans running. The third special election of 2011, in NV-02 also features a Democratic woman; EMILY's List put Kate Marshall "On the List" just last week. Five of six Democratic challengers in the Wisconsin recall elections are women.
EMILY's List is announcing its endorsement of all five Democratic women challengers in the Wisconsin recall elections this summer:
- Nancy Nusbaum (SD-02)
- Sandy Pasch (SD-08)
- Shelly Moore (SD-10)
- Jessica King (SD-18)
- Jennifer Shilling (SD-32)
"These five women represent the best chance to stop a radical Republican agenda that would gut schools, cut funding for health care for seniors, and raise taxes on working families," said Stephanie Schriock, President of EMILY's List. "Republicans all over the country are waging war on American women and their families. Wisconsin is the next front in that war and we are making a stand. The best way to stop Republicans from slashing the programs women and their families rely on is to elect more Democratic women to office."
EMILY's List is launching a one-stop shop for information about the candidates, the real story about the radical Republican agenda and how to get involved at www.emilyslist.org/wisconsin.
EMILY's List, is launching this campaign through Wisconsin Women Vote!, an independent expenditure arm of the organization. The campaign will include direct voter contact and a paid media component, in partnership with the labor and progressive coalition We Are Wisconsin PAC. Over the next weeks and months, the goal will be to communicate with Wisconsin voters about how the Republican agenda hurts women and families, and the alternative presented by these five Democratic women challengers.
Notably, during the Wisconsin recall elections, EMILY's List will depart from standard practices and operate entirely as an independent expenditure organization. Efforts will include paid on-line and television advertising, as well as a concerted earned media and rapid response focus. EMILY's List will also mobilize its grassroots activists -- Team EMILY -- setting up national phonebanks where women from all over the country can talk to Wisconsin women voters. And for the first time, Team EMILY will also participate in on-the-ground GOTV in Wisconsin.
In the 2009-2010 cycle, EMILY's List raised more than $38.5 million to support its mission of recruiting and supporting women candidates, helping them build strong campaigns, and mobilizing women voters to turn out and vote. With a community of more than 900,000 members across the country, EMILY's List is one of the largest political action committees in the nation. Since its founding in 1985, EMILY's List has worked to elect 85 pro-choice Democratic women to the U.S. House, 16 to the U.S. Senate, nine governors, and hundreds of women to the state legislatures, state constitutional offices, and other key local offices. In the 2009-2010 cycle, EMILY's List had the largest number of members and donors in our 25 year history.
