EMILY's List Congratulates Janice Hahn on Special Election Victory
Democratic Women Continue Building Momentum to Take Back the House
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- EMILY's List, the nation's largest resource for women in politics, tonight congratulates Janice Hahn on winning the special election in CA-36.
"The entire EMILY's List community could not be happier with tonight's victory," said Stephanie Schriock, President of EMILY's List. "Janice Hahn is heading to the House of Representatives after defeating a multi-millionaire self-funding opponent who resorted to some of the most underhanded tactics we've ever seen. Craig Huey's right wing policies and tea party agenda attracted allies who ran sexist advertisements whose actual stated goal was to suppress the female vote. But the women of California's 36th made sure those ads didn't work and women's voices were heard.
"Janice's race proved yet again that the best way to fight back against the Republican war on women is to elect more strong women to Congress. EMILY's List was proud to stand with Janice in her campaign, is thrilled by her victory and looks forward to her leadership in Congress."
EMILY's List was one of the first national groups to support Hahn and had her back throughout the run-off. The EMILY's List network of almost a million members were energized by this campaign, raised hundreds of thousands of dollars, and made sure that no sexist charge went unanswered.
In the 2009-2010 cycle, EMILY's List raised more than $38.5 million to support its mission of recruiting and supporting women candidates, helping them build strong campaigns, and mobilizing women voters to turn out and vote. With a community of more than 900,000 members across the country, EMILY's List is one of the largest political action committees in the nation. Since its founding in 1985, EMILY's List has worked to elect 86 pro-choice Democratic women to the U.S. House, 16 to the U.S. Senate, nine governors, and hundreds of women to the state legislatures, state constitutional offices, and other key local offices. In the 2009-2010 cycle, EMILY's List had the largest number of members and donors in our 25 year history.
