EMILY’s List Launches the Madam President Campaign: New National Campaign to Put a Woman in the White House

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics unveiled the Madam President campaign, a new national campaign to put a woman in the White House. Backed by results from a new battleground state poll, the campaign will build a base of voters committed to a long-term goal of electing the first woman President of the United States.

“The EMILY’s List community – now more than two million members strong – and countless other Americans across the nation, are ready to put a woman in the White House who will move the country forward,” said Stephanie Schriock, President of EMILY’s List. “In 2012 voters across the country elected an historic number of women leaders because they had the right priorities— the Madam President campaign will build on that base, harness their energy and enthusiasm for women’s leadership, and channel it towards putting a woman in the Oval Office.  We have a deep bench of women leaders committed to fighting for progressive change who are up to the task of taking their place on the Democratic ticket in 2016 and beyond. It is clear that this is our time – we are ready for a Madam President.”

Harnessing the energy and resources of the more than two million member EMILY’s List community, the Madam President campaign will capitalize on the demand for women’s leadership that was made evident during the 2012 election, when the Republican Party overwhelmingly lost to progressive Democratic women candidates across the country.

The Madam President campaign will target 2016 battleground state voters and hold events in Iowa, Nevada, and New Hampshire in the coming months. The effort will also include significant, sustained online advertising to engage nationwide support, as well as other online activity.

Polling released today by 2012 presidential pollsters Lisa Grove and Jeffrey Liszt of Anzalone Liszt Grove Research showed that voters in battleground states are ready for a woman president, and see a woman president as someone who can make a positive impact. Of the voters surveyed in battleground states:

  • 90% would consider voting for a qualified woman candidate from their party
  • 86% believe that America is ready to elect a woman president
  • 72% believe that it is likely that America will elect a woman president in the next presidential election
  • 51% believe that the women elected to Congress and Senate last cycle are making a positive difference
  • 75% believe a woman president would be a good thing for this country, and that it will send a positive signal to our children and grandchildren
  • And a female president is perceived to be as capable or more capable than a male president when it comes to:

o   Understanding the challenges that middle class families face and the challenge of juggling work and family

o   Ending partisan bickering

o   Putting families ahead of politics

During the 2011- 2012 election cycle, EMILY’s List helped elect an historic number of candidates – the only pro-choice Democratic woman governor in the country, 19 new women to the House, six Senate incumbents, and three new Senators – all the first women to represent their states in the Senate. And this cycle, women we’ve helped elect include the first Hindu and first female combat veterans to serve in the House, the first openly gay Senator, and the first Asian American woman to serve in the Senate. With a community that has quintupled since 2010 – now more than two million members strong – EMILY's List is one of the largest political action committees in the nation. Since its founding in 1985, EMILY's List has worked to elect 101 pro-choice Democratic women to the House, 19 to the Senate, 10 governors, and over five hundred women to state and local office. In the 2011-2012 cycle, EMILY's List had the largest number of members and donors in our 28 year history, and raised a record-breaking $52 million dollars.
