EMILY’s List Endorses Marilyn Strickland for Second Term as Mayor of Tacoma, Washington
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Marilyn Strickland for reelection as Mayor of Tacoma. She is the eighth mayoral candidate EMILY’s List is currently backing in 2013, the “Year of the Woman Mayor.”
“After over three years of strong leadership in the mayor’s office, Marilyn Strickland has proven to be an innovative and dedicated leader who works tirelessly for the people of Tacoma,” said Stephanie Schriock, President of EMILY’s List. “Marilyn’s commitment to serving women and families is matched only by her ability to steer the local economy toward growth. She has helped Tacoma thrive by providing tax relief for thousands of small businesses, encouraging private investment, and working to increase exports. Marilyn Strickland brings both private and public sector experience to her role as Mayor of Tacoma, Washington. She has held management positions with both the American Cancer Society and Starbucks Coffee Company. Strickland also worked at JayRay Communications, where she helped launch Click!Network, a broadband telecommunications provider operated by Tacoma Public Utilities An advocate of Tacoma’s workforce, Strickland helps public employees and retirees access benefits as Board Chair of Tacoma Employees’ Retirement System. She also sits on the U.S. Conference of Mayors Workforce Development Council and is a member of Tacoma Pierce County Economic Development Board. Strickland has prioritized expanding access to high quality education, and collaborated with the College Success Foundation to create the City of Destiny Scholarship for STEM students. A strong supporter of public transportation, she serves as board chair for Pierce Transit and is a member of Smart Growth America’s Local Leaders Council. Strickland lives in Tacoma’s downtown area with her husband, Patrick Erwin.
EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $350 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making it one of the most successful political action committees in the country. Throughout its 28 year history, the organization has recruited and trained over 8,000 women to run, worked to elect 101 pro-choice Democratic women to the House, 19 to the Senate, 10 governors, and over five hundred women to state and local office. Since its founding in 1985, EMILY’s List helped elect 97% of the Democratic women of color in Congress, including every single Latina, African American, and Asian American Democratic woman currently serving.
