EMILY’s List Endorses Kamala D. Harris and Betty Yee in California

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Attorney General Kamala D. Harris for reelection, and Betty Yee for State Controller in California.

“EMILY’s List has a proud history of endorsing outstanding pro-choice Democratic women in California, and we’re excited to build on that tradition by endorsing Kamala D. Harris and Betty Yee,” said Stephanie Schriock, President of EMILY’s List. “Betty’s expertise in finance, record of fiscal discipline, and strong public policy experience make her the right leader to serve as California’s chief financial officer. And Kamala’s fantastic track record of fighting for economic fairness, stronger law enforcement, and healthcare access prove that she’s still the only choice for Attorney General. The EMILY’s List community – now more than 2 million strong – is thrilled to support their campaigns.”

“Over the last two and a half decades, EMILY’s List has helped elect dozens of highly qualified women candidates in California at all levels of public office,” said Kamala D. Harris. “I am honored to have EMILY’s List once again by my side in this campaign."

"I am honored and proud to receive the early support of EMILY's List, affirming the importance of women serving in statewide offices across the nation," Betty Yee stated in response to the endorsement. "I am grateful that EMILY's List will be focused on building and strengthening the numbers of women in statewide offices in 2014 where strong leadership is critical to the economic and fiscal health of states and in turn our nation."

Kamala D. Harris was sworn in as the 32nd Attorney General of the State of California in 2011. She is the first woman, the first African American, and the first South Asian to hold the office in the history of California. As chief law enforcement officer for the state, Attorney General Harris has focused on combating transnational gangs that are trafficking guns, drugs, and human beings throughout California. She has worked to increase the adoption of technology and data-driven policing to assist law enforcement in the efficient investigation and prosecution of crime, and has traveled to every region of California to expand partnerships with local law enforcement. As chief lawyer for the people of California, Attorney General Harris has led a bold response to the state’s foreclosure crisis. She has expanded prosecutions of mortgage-related fraud and crime by establishing a multidivisional Mortgage Fraud Strike Force, securing an estimated $18 billion for California homeowners from our nation’s banks. She wrote the nation’s most comprehensive package of foreclosure reforms—the California Homeowner Bill of Rights—and fought successfully for its passage through the California Legislature and saw it signed into law. She has also fought to preserve California’s natural resources, ensure marriage equality for all Californians, and defend the Affordable Care Act. Betty Yee has more than 28 years of experience in public service.  Since 2004, Ms. Yee has served as a member and twice-chair of the California State Board of Equalization, the nation's only elected tax commission. She represents 9 million Californians in the First Equalization District spanning from Del Norte County to Santa Barbara County along the coast and including the entire San Francisco Bay Area. During her tenure on the Board, Ms. Yee led, among other things, the enactment of state tax equity for same-sex couples, e-fairness legislation to level the playing field between online retailers and Main Street merchants, updating California’s tax rules to promote the green economy, and the expansion of free tax resources to promote greater compliance among small businesses.   For more information about Betty Yee's campaign, visit

During the 2011- 2012 election cycle, EMILY’s List helped elect an historic number of candidates – the only pro-choice Democratic woman governor in the country, 19 new women to the House, six Senate incumbents, and three new Senators – all the first women to represent their states in the Senate. And this cycle, women we’ve helped elect include the first Hindu and first female combat veterans to serve in the House, the first openly gay Senator, and the first Asian American woman to serve in the Senate. With a community that has quintupled since 2010 – now more than two million members strong – EMILY's List is one of the largest political action committees in the nation. Since its founding in 1985, EMILY's List has worked to elect 100 pro-choice Democratic women to the House, 19 to the Senate, 10 governors, and over five hundred women to state and local office. In the 2011-2012 cycle, EMILY's List had the largest number of members and donors in our 28 year history, and raised a record-breaking $52 million dollars.
