EMILY’s List Congratulates Julia Brownley on Her Victory in California!

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Last night, voters in California’s 26th district elected Julia Brownley to Congress.

“Julia Brownley is a strong leader with an impressive track record of fighting for women and families,” said Stephanie Schriock, President of EMILY’s List. “And from coast to coast, voters elected progressive leaders like Julia Brownley, and rejected Republican extremists who would roll back the clock by blocking access to reproductive healthcare and equal pay. With so much at stake, the growing EMILY’s List community—now two million members strong— mobilized an impressive number of women voters who helped Julia Brownley through competitive primary and general elections, and helped reelect President Obama. Julia Brownley and the record number of pro-choice Democratic women who she will be joining her in Congress will end the Republican War on Women, and build a more progressive America.”

Julia Brownley, as an alumna of our Political Opportunity Program, has been a member of the EMILY’s List community since 2005 when she first ran for California state assembly. EMILY’s List raised  $223,223.16  for her in the 2011-2012 election cycle. Julia Brownley is a strong advocate for education and women’s health. After serving for more than a decade on Santa Monica-Malibu’s School Board, Julia put her education policy experience to work in the State Assembly, cutting school administration costs and eliminating red tape for qualified teachers. Her bills to streamline child abuse investigations, and expand maternity healthcare coverage have helped countless women and families throughout California.

Because of California’s new open primary system, WOMEN VOTE! worked to coalesce the Democratic vote around Julia Brownley to ensure her place in the November general election. With six candidates on the ballot, including four Democrats, WOMEN VOTE! touted Julia Brownley as the Democratic champion in the race.  The WOMEN VOTE! program targeted 39,000 pro-choice Democratic and decline-to-state primary voting women with a five piece direct mail program highlighting Brownley’s positions on women’s health care, sex education, reproductive choice and access to birth control. Brownley came second with 27 percent, topping the other Democrats and the independent in the primary, ensuring her a spot on the general election ballot. WOMEN VOTE! spent approximately $114,000 on behalf of Julia Brownley.

Launched in 1995, the historic EMILY's List WOMEN VOTE! project combines polling and research, advanced information technology, sophisticated message testing, and precinct-by-precinct field work to mobilize millions of women voters across the country. EMILY's List designed WOMEN VOTE! to build a progressive political base that will elect more Democrats, especially women, by helping to increase turnout among women voters year after year.

During the 2011- 2012 election cycle, EMILY’s List endorsed an impressive number of candidates, worked to elect three pro-choice Democratic women to the House in special elections, and helped 11 House candidates, one Senate candidate, and one gubernatorial candidate make it through competitive primaries. With a community that has more than quadrupled since 2010 – now more than 2,000,000 members strong – EMILY's List is one of the largest political action committees in the nation. Since its founding in 1985, EMILY's List has worked to elect 87 pro-choice Democratic women to the House, 16 to the Senate, nine governors, and over five hundred of women to state and local office. In the 2011-2012 cycle, EMILY's List had the largest number of members and donors in our 27 year history, and raised an impressive $51.2 million dollars.
