EMILY’s List Congratulates Elizabeth Esty on Her Victory in Connecticut!
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Tonight, voters in Connecticut’s fifth congressional district elected Elizabeth Esty to Congress. With the help of EMILY’s List WOMEN VOTE! Esty won a competitive primary race back in August, and is now victorious in the general election.
“Elizabeth Esty is an outstanding progressive leader with a sterling record of public service,” said Stephanie Schriock, President of EMILY’s List. “This election provided a clear choice between leaders like Elizabeth Esty who want to move forward by expanding opportunities for women and families, and those who would roll back the clock by blocking access to reproductive healthcare and equal pay. From coast to coast, the EMILY’s List community – now more than two million members strong – mobilized an impressive number of women voters, who are on track to send a record number of pro-choice Democratic women to Congress, and helped reelect President Obama. EMILY’s List was proud to help Elizabeth Esty through competitive primary and general elections, and we are thrilled that she will now join other outstanding pro-choice Democratic women in the House to end the Republican War on Women.”
EMILY’s List raised $186,932.28 for Elizabeth Esty in the 2011-2012 election cycle. Endorsed by EMILY’s List in December 2011, Elizabeth Esty previously served in the State House where she was committed to expanding healthcare access and economic opportunity for women and families in Connecticut.
In Connecticut’s fifth congressional district primary EMILY’s List WOMEN VOTE! designed a direct mail program reaching more than 26,000 Democratic primary voting women who were age 45 or older. The women received six pieces of direct mail. Additionally, WOMEN VOTE! went up on TV with a positive ad highlighting Esty’s endorsements by The New York Times, The Register Citizen and The Hartford Courant. The buy included nearly 500 points on Hartford broadcast and a massive district-wide cable buy, with heavier rotation in Litchfield and Hartford. Esty won the three-way primary with 45 percent of the vote. WOMEN VOTE! spent approximately $413,000 on behalf of Elizabeth Esty.
Launched in 1995, the historic EMILY's List WOMEN VOTE! project combines polling and research, advanced information technology, sophisticated message testing, and precinct-by-precinct field work to mobilize millions of women voters across the country. EMILY's List designed WOMEN VOTE! to build a progressive political base that will elect more Democrats, especially women, by helping to increase turnout among women voters year after year.
During the 2011- 2012 election cycle, EMILY’s List endorsed an impressive number of candidates, worked to elect three pro-choice Democratic women to the House in special elections, and helped 11 House candidates, one Senate candidate, and one gubernatorial candidate make it through competitive primaries. With a community that has more than quadrupled since 2010 – now more than 2,000,000 members strong – EMILY's List is one of the largest political action committees in the nation. Since its founding in 1985, EMILY's List has worked to elect 87 pro-choice Democratic women to the House, 16 to the Senate, nine governors, and over five hundred of women to state and local office. In the 2011-2012 cycle, EMILY's List had the largest number of members and donors in our 27 year history, and raised an impressive $51.2 million dollars.
