Statement from Ellen R. Malcolm on Niki Tsongas' Victory In Massachusetts's Fifth Congressional District

The following is a statement from EMILY's List president Ellen R. Malcolm on the victory of Niki Tsongas in Massachusetts's fifth congressional district:

"Yesterday, the voters of the Massachusetts's fifth congressional district made history by electing Niki Tsongas the first Democratic woman to represent Massachusetts in Congress in more than 35 years. They chose this tremendous leader because they know from day one – from this week forward – she will be making a difference for the voters of this district on health care, on Iraq, and on a myriad of issues which will have a positive impact on their lives. One of her first acts as a congresswoman will be to vote to override the president's veto of legislation renewing the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). On behalf of the thousands of EMILY's List members who supported Niki Tsongas, I congratulate her on a hard fought victory and express our great pride in helping her make history and a better future for the people of Massachusetts."

Background:

EMILY's List endorsed Niki Tsongas in May of this year and began an aggressive campaign to help her win the heavily contested primary and general special elections. EMILY's List members from across the country contributed to her campaign and the EMILY's List WOMEN VOTE!® program independently played a critical role in educating and mobilizing women voters in the district.

With more than 100,000 members across the country, EMILY's List is the largest political action committee in the nation. Since its founding in 1985, EMILY's List has raised over $240 million to elect 68 pro-choice Democratic women to the U.S. House, 13 to the U.S. Senate, and eight governors. Over the course of 22 years, EMILY's List has helped elect hundreds of pro-choice Democratic women to federal office, state legislatures, state constitutional offices, and other key local offices.
