Ellen R. Malcolm, President of EMILY's List, on the Supreme Court Ruling Undermining Choice

"This decision deals a serious blow to Roe v. Wade because, for the first time, the Court has refused to protect a woman's health. The Bush administration and his court appointees have so whittled away at the basic reproductive rights of women that Roe is hanging by a thread.

"The great concern is that the Court has now opened the door to a multitude of heinous restrictions that are passing in state legislatures across the country.

"Every time the Court looks at Roe v. Wade it becomes clearer and clearer that we need to elect pro-choice majorities in the states and in Congress.

"In May 2005, a national poll conducted by EMILY's List showed voters beginning to reject the right-wing agenda as they witnessed Congress's intrusion in the personal medical decisions of the Schiavo family. I think voters will be equally horrified by this decision, which gives right-wing politicians permission to further restrict reproductive rights and overrule the medical decisions of doctors.

"This decision will even further motivate Democratic voters, particularly women, to elect a pro-choice Democratic president in 2008. Americans know that one more Republican Supreme Court nominee will be the end of Roe v. Wade. I think Americans will cast their ballots to make sure that does not happen."
