EMILY’s List Congratulates Kathy Hochul On Winning The NY-26 Special Election

WASHINGTON D.C. -- EMILY's List, the nation's largest resource for women in politics, today congratulates Kathy Hochul on winning the special election in NY-26.

"EMILY's List is so proud of Kathy Hochul and her amazing win in the NY-26 special election. Our community has been excited and engaged in Kathy's race since the start, and together, we've defeated two multi-millionaire self-funding opponents and Karl Rove and his gang of third party conservative groups," said Stephanie Schriock, President of EMILY's List. "In a race that was supposed to be walk for Republicans, Kathy's strong campaign forced the GOP and conservative groups to outspend Democratic groups 2-to-1. Kathy's message of job creation and fiscal responsibility resonated with voters, while her Republican opponent proved that a plan to end Medicare as we know it is a pretty weak electoral strategy.

"The EMILY's List community of nearly a million Americans are excited to have been a part of the incredible campaign Kathy Hochul ran and pleased to have begun the effort to take back the House. It's fitting that it began with the victory of a strong Democratic woman who was the clear choice for the voters."

EMILY's List endorsed Hochul on April 22nd -- and immediately began raising money and engaging our community of almost one million people in her campaign. In this campaign, EMILY's List proved once again the strength of the growing EMILY's List community. In just one month we were able to raise over $90,000 for Hochul and around 34% of those donations were from first time EMILY's List donors.

In the final days of the race Team EMILY, our volunteer voter contact effort, mobilized hundreds of people to make thousands of phone calls to target women voters across the district on the importance of voting in this election.

In the 2009-2010 cycle, EMILY's List raised more than $38.5 million to support its mission of recruiting and supporting women candidates, helping them build strong campaigns, and mobilizing women voters to turn out and vote. With a community of more than 900,000 members across the country, EMILY's List is one of the largest political action committees in the nation. Since its founding in 1985, EMILY's List has worked to elect 85 pro-choice Democratic women to the U.S. House, 16 to the U.S. Senate, nine governors, and hundreds of women to the state legislatures, state constitutional offices, and other key local offices. In the 2009-2010 cycle, EMILY's List had the largest number of members and donors in our 25 year history.
