Democratic Women Senators Speak Out Against GOP Agenda

Statement from EMILY's List President Stephanie Schriock

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Stephanie Schriock, President of EMILY's List, the nation's largest resource for women in politics, today praised the seven women U.S. Senators who stood up against the budget proposal and the radical agenda of the House GOP.

"Over the last couple months, we've seen again that when left to their own devices, Republican men will attack the programs American women rely on to take care of themselves and their families. Whether it makes fiscal sense or not. This afternoon, we saw women fight back. The Democratic women in the Senate said that they would stand in between American women and the radical anti-woman agenda put forward by John Boehner and House Republicans.

"American women are glad to know there are Democratic women in Congress who have our backs, because the GOP is doing everything it can to take away our access to health care, our ability to plan and care for a family, and our opportunities to make successful, safe, and healthy lives for ourselves and our families.

"Today, our champions in the Senate made noise as if their numbers were much, much greater. And one day they will be."

In the 2009-2010 cycle, EMILY's List raised more than $38.5 million to support its mission of recruiting and supporting women candidates, helping them build strong campaigns, and mobilizing women voters to turn out and vote. With a community of more than 600,000 members across the country, EMILY's List is one of the largest political action committees in the nation. Since its founding in 1985, EMILY's List has worked to elect 84 pro-choice Democratic women to the U.S. House, 16 to the U.S. Senate, nine governors, and hundreds of women to the state legislatures, state constitutional offices, and other key local offices. In the 2009-2010 cycle, EMILY's List had the largest number of members and donors in our 25 year history.
