EMILY's List Endorses Gina Raimondo for General Treasurer of Rhode Island
WASHINGTON, D.C. - EMILY's List, the nation's largest financial resource for women candidates, today announced its endorsement of Gina Raimondo for State Treasurer of Rhode Island.
"We are excited to support Gina Raimondo in her campaign to become Rhode Island's next General Treasurer," said Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILY's List. "Gina's background in business, balancing budgets and managing money will help lead Rhode Island through these tough economic times. As Treasurer, she will put her investment and small business experience to work for all Rhode Islanders. EMILY's List is proud to endorse Gina Raimondo to be the next General Treasurer of Rhode Island."
Raimondo is a successful business leader and actively involved in her community. She co-founded Point Judith Capital, a Providence-based investment company that invests in start-up companies in high-growth industries, primarily in the IT, healthcare, and internet industries. Under her leadership, Point Judith has grown to $100 million of assets under management and has invested in over 20 start-up companies, including Narragansett Brewing Company and NABsys in Rhode Island.
"I'm thrilled to earn the EMILY's List endorsement," said Raimondo. "The support from EMILY's List will help us build a strong statewide campaign across Rhode Island."
Raimondo currently serves as Vice Chair of the board of Crossroads RI, the state's largest homeless services organization and she played a key role in launching a new shelter for women. Raimondo is also a trustee at Women and Infants Hospital, and has served on the boards of Family Service RI and LaSalle Academy.
Raimondo received her BA in Economics from Harvard University, where she was recognized as the top economics student in the Class of 1993. She earned a doctorate from Oxford University (1999) where she studied as a Rhodes Scholar. She earned her law degree in 1998 from Yale Law School, where she served as co-head of its Housing and Economic Development clinic, and received an Olin Scholarship for law and economics. After law school, she began her career as a judicial clerk for the Hon. Kimba M. Wood on the United States District Court, Southern District of New York.
EMILY's List created the Political Opportunity Program (POP) in 2001. POP recruits, trains, and supports pro-choice Democratic women running for state legislative, constitutional and key local offices. Since then, POP has helped elect hundreds of women across the United States. In 2006, the Political Opportunity Program helped elect Elizabeth Roberts as Rhode Island's first woman Lieutenant Governor.
In the 2007-2008 cycle, EMILY's List raised more than $43 million to support its mission of recruiting and supporting women candidates, helping them build strong campaigns, and mobilizing women voters to turn out and vote. With more than 100,000 members across the country, EMILY's List is one of the largest political action committees in the nation. Since its founding in 1985, EMILY's List has worked to elect 80 pro-choice Democratic women to the U.S. House, 15 to the U.S. Senate, nine governors, and hundreds of women to the state legislatures, state constitutional offices, and other key local offices.
