EMILY's List Endorses Janice Hahn for Lieutenant Governor, Kamala Harris for Attorney General and Gloria Romero for Superintendant of Public Instruction
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- EMILY's List, the nation's largest financial resource for women candidates, today announced its endorsements of Janice Hahn, Kamala Harris and Gloria Romero for statewide office in California.
"EMILY's List is excited to endorse three remarkable women for statewide office in California," said Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILY's List. "They represent a new generation of women to serve California's families and communities. Janice Hahn's background in public service and economic development will help lead California through these challenging times. Kamala Harris will continue her lifelong effort for justice by cracking down on violent crime and getting guns and drugs off the street. Gloria Romero will work to strengthen schools and bolster teacher training to give students the best shot at a bright future. Together, these women will play a vital role getting California back on track. EMILY's List is thrilled to endorse these experienced and capable leaders in 2010."
With a background in business, community activism, and public service, Janice Hahn has the experience necessary to tackle the tough problems facing California. She is currently serving in her third and final term on the Los Angeles City Council representing the 15th district.
In 2003, Kamala Harris was elected as the first woman District Attorney in San Francisco. Harris has spent her professional life in the trenches as a courtroom prosecutor. Under her leadership, the San Francisco District Attorney's office has sent 50 percent more serious and violent offenders to state prison, and convicted more than 1,200 domestic violence offenders.
A lifelong public servant, California State Senator Gloria Romero was elected to the 24th Senate District, encompassing greater Los Angeles County, in 2001. Soon after she was elected by her peers to serve as Democratic Caucus Chair and then as Majority Leader; the first and only woman to ever hold that leadership position in the California State Senate.
EMILY's List has already endorsed U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer's 2010 re-election campaign. Over the years, EMILY's List has had much success in California, helping elect the state's two U.S. Senators, 21 Congresswomen and 39 women to state and local office.
EMILY's List is the nation's largest financial resource for women candidates. In the 2007-2008 cycle, EMILY's List raised more than $43 million to support its mission of recruiting and supporting women candidates, helping them build strong campaigns, and mobilizing women voters to turn out and vote. With more than 100,000 members across the country, EMILY's List is one of the largest political action committees in the nation. Since its founding in 1985, EMILY's List has worked to elect 80 pro-choice Democratic women to the U.S. House, 15 to the U.S. Senate, nine governors, and hundreds of women to the state legislatures, state constitutional offices, and other key local offices.
