EMILY's List Celebrates Annise Parker's Historic Election as Mayor of Houston
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- EMILY's List, the nation's largest financial resource for women candidates, celebrated Annise Parker's election as Mayor of Houston.
"Last night Annise Parker made history and was elected Mayor of Houston, Texas – the fourth largest city in the nation," said Ellen R. Malcolm, President of EMILY's List. "As a city councilor, city comptroller, and a successful businesswoman, Annise earned a reputation as a hard working and thoughtful leader. As Mayor, she'll continue that tradition and work to build Houston's economy creating jobs and opportunity for its people."
"Last night's victory is a demonstration that even when faced with ugly, negative campaigning, the best candidate can triumph," continued Malcolm. "It is important to celebrate these milestones and marvel at how far we've come, but also to remember all the work we have ahead of us. EMILY's List is proud to have been part of this historic and successful campaign."
EMILY’s List endorsed Annise Parker for Mayor earlier this year and has long supported her campaigns for City Comptroller in Houston. EMILY's List is the nation's largest financial resource for women candidates. EMILY's List's Political Opportunity Program (POP) helps pro-choice Democratic women run and win for state and local office. Since the program started in 2001, POP has helped elect hundreds of women across the country.
In the 2007-2008 cycle, EMILY's List raised more than $43 million to support its mission of recruiting and supporting women candidates, helping them build strong campaigns, and mobilizing women voters to turn out and vote. With more than 100,000 members across the country, EMILY's List is one of the largest political action committees in the nation. Since its founding in 1985, EMILY's List has worked to elect 80 pro-choice Democratic women to the U.S. House, 15 to the U.S. Senate, nine governors, and hundreds of women to the state legislatures, state constitutional offices, and other key local offices.
