EMILY's List Endorses Regina Romero for Tucson City Council Ward 1

EMILY's List, the nation's largest political action committee and financial resource for women running for elective office, is proud to announce the endorsement of Regina Romero in her run for Tucson City Council in Ward 1. EMILY's List has extended its support to Romero through the Political Opportunity Program (POP), a groundbreaking training and support program for pro-choice Democratic women seeking state legislative, constitutional, and key local offices.

A southern Arizona native raised in a farmworker family in Somerton, Romero was the first in her family to graduate from college. Throughout her career, Romero has worked with the Board of Supervisors, school districts, Pima Community College and private agencies. She has served as the Pima County Program Coordinator for Neighborhood Reinvestment and an aide to Tucson City Council Member Karin Uhlich, focusing on community development issues. Romero co-founded the Arizona César Chávez Holiday Coalition and Las Adelitas, an organization united to improve the quality of life for Latinas and their families through political empowerment.

Romero has gained wide-spread support from EMILY's List and countless others because of her dedication to improving neighborhood safety while working with the community to create smart, practical solutions for Tucson. In addition to endorsements from public figures such as Governor Janet Napolitano, Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, Congressman Grijalva and many important Tucson officials, Romero also has the unanimous backing of all five current City Council members. Should Romero win, she will be the first Latina elected to the Tucson City Council and first woman to represent Ward 1.

"I am thrilled to announce the endorsement of Regina Romero," said Susan Markham, Director of the Political Opportunity Program. "Regina has devoted her life to helping the women and families of Tucson and is a rising star in Arizona politics. We know that she will carry the same dedication, excellence, and passion she has demonstrated over her decade of public service into her new role on the City Council."

This race will be determined on September 11th in the Democratic primary between Regina Romero and Kenneth Green as there is no Republican or third-party opposition.

With more than 100,000 members across the country, EMILY's List is the largest political action committee in the nation. Since its founding in 1985, EMILY's List has raised over $240 million to help elect hundreds of pro-choice Democratic women to federal office, state legislatures, state constitutional offices, and other key local offices. In 2001, EMILY's List expanded its support of pro-choice Democratic women candidates by establishing its Political Opportunity Program (POP). Through POP, EMILY's List is developing and nurturing the next generation of pro-choice Democratic women political leaders by investing in women candidates at the state and local levels.
