EMILY's List Celebrates Multiple Victories for Democratic Women in Missouri and Michigan

The following are comments from EMILY's List president and founder Ellen R. Malcolm on victories by EMILY's List candidates in primary races in Missouri and Michigan:

“Today, EMILY's List celebrates multiple victories for Democratic women candidates in Missouri and Michigan. From the U.S. House to the state legislature, EMILY’s List candidates like Congresswoman Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick and state Rep. Judy Baker won hard fought congressional primary victories. These women demonstrated the passion, determination, and vision that voters want to bring to government. These wins in Missouri and Michigan build on the growing list of victories for EMILY’s List candidates this cycle, including primary wins in Maine, North Carolina, and Indiana, as well as the election of four new Democratic women to Congress.”

In Missouri, state Rep. Judy Baker emerged victorious from her crowded Democratic primary in Missouri’s 9th district, as voters responded to her promise to bring a new kind of politics to Washington. While former Kansas City Mayor Kay Barnes easily won her primary for Missouri’s 6th congressional district, she will face a heated general election to oust a Republican incumbent in November. In the still unresolved Missouri attorney general race, state Rep. Margaret Donnelly may seek a recount after yesterday’s voting ended in a virtual tie. Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan was unopposed in her primary and will go on to vie for re-election in November. In addition, two Democratic women won their primaries for state House and one woman won her primary for state Senate.

In Michigan, voters continue to demonstrate their belief in the leadership of Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, who faces her general election ready to serve her seventh term representing Michigan’s 13th congressional district. Additionally, EMILY's List is excited to announce that six Democratic women won their contested primaries for Michigan’s state House.

Background

Already this cycle, EMILY’s List has celebrated tremendous victories, adding four new Democratic women to the 110th Congress through special elections: Laura Richardson (CA), Niki Tsongas (MA), Jackie Speier (CA), and Donna Edwards (MD). In addition, EMILY’s List candidates have won key primaries in the Indiana governor’s race, and the North Carolina senate and governor’s races.

With more than 100,000 members across the country, EMILY’s List is one of the largest political action committees in the nation. Since its founding in 1985, EMILY's List has raised over $240 million to elect 71 pro-choice Democratic women to the U.S. House, 13 to the U.S. Senate, and eight governors. Over the course of 23 years, EMILY’s List has helped elect hundreds of pro-choice Democratic women to federal office, state legislatures, state constitutional offices, and other key local offices.
