EMILY's List Announces Endorsement of Christine Jennings for Florida's 13th Congressional District
Washington, D.C. -- EMILY's List, the nation's largest grassroots political network and financial resource for women running for elective office, today announced its endorsement of Christine Jennings in her bid for Florida's 13th Congressional District.
"Christine Jennings is a perfect fit to fill the leadership void suffered by the 13th District under Rep. Katherine Harris," said Ellen R. Malcolm, president of EMILY's List. "With her tremendous track-record of service to her community and sharp skills honed in a successful business career, Christine Jennings offers the strong, centrist leadership that voters want in Congress. As a Congresswoman, she will work hard for Florida, just as she always has, and EMILY's List is proud to support her campaign for the U.S. House of Representatives in this crucial year for women and Democrats."
Christine Jennings has never been one to shy away from a challenge. Jennings, who is a classic example of the American dream, worked hard in her career to rise from bank teller to bank president at a time when women executives were rare. On her way to the top of the banking world, Jennings served in numerous leadership positions with various banks before serving as founder, president, CEO, chairman of the board and director of Sarasota Bank.
A native of New Boston, Ohio, Jennings moved to Sarasota in 1984 and has been actively involved in the community ever since. She has served in leadership roles in a number of civic and charitable groups over the years including serving as president of the Sarasota Downtown Association, president of the Sarasota Film Festival, board member of the Community AIDS Network, and of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Sarasota County. Former Governor Lawton Chiles appointed Jennings as chair of the Real Property-Lease Procurement task force.
She has received numerous awards from the groups including the United Negro College Fund, the National Council of Jewish Women and the National Association of Fundraising Executives. She also received numerous appointments over the years to various boards and task forces.
With more than 100,000 members, including more than 6,000 in Florida, EMILY's List is the largest political action committee in the nation. Since its founding in 1985, EMILY's List has helped elect 61 pro-choice Democratic women to the U.S. House, 11 to the U.S. Senate, and eight governors. In only ten election cycles, EMILY's List has helped elect hundreds of pro-choice Democratic women to federal office, state legislatures, state constitutional offices and other key local offices.
