EMILY's List Announces Support of Denise O'Donnell for New York Attorney General

WASHINGTON, D.C. - EMILY's List, the nation's largest grassroots political network and financial resource for women running for elective office, is proud to announce its backing of Denise O'Donnell in her bid for Attorney General of New York. Through the Political Opportunity Program (POP), an initiative to mobilize, train, and financially support candidates running at the state and local levels, EMILY's List has extended its support to Denise O'Donnell.

"As a public servant, Denise O'Donnell has dedicated her career to serving the people of New York as a federal prosecutor and U.S. Attorney for Western New York," said Kate Coyne McCoy, EMILY's List regional director. "She has a reputation for being tough, independent, dedicated - exactly what New York needs in its next attorney general."

O'Donnell was born and raised in New York. She was the first member of her family to attend college, and after graduation she became a social worker in New York City. As a working mother, she attended law school, graduating summa cum laude and became a federal prosecutor. In the mid-1990s she was appointed U.S. Attorney for Western New York – taking on some of the toughest cases.

As New York's Attorney General, O'Donnell will bring the professionalism of being a prosecutor to the job, as she is the only professional prosecutor in the race.

"This endorsement means so much to me because EMILY's List has been the driving force behind the election of so many talented women across this country. I appreciate this strong vote of confidence in my campaign and in my skills as the only professional prosecutor in this race," said Denise O'Donnell. "EMILY's List knows how to win and I am honored that they have decided to help make me the first woman elected as attorney general in New York state history."

EMILY's List is the largest political action committee in the nation. EMILY's List has helped elect 61 pro-choice Democratic women to the U.S. House, 11 to the U.S. Senate, and eight governors. EMILY's List has also helped elect hundreds of pro-choice Democratic women to state legislatures, state constitutional offices, and key local offices. In 2001, EMILY's List expanded its support of pro-choice Democratic women candidates by establishing its Political Opportunity Program (POP). Through POP, EMILY's List is developing and nurturing the next generation of pro-choice Democratic women political leaders by investing in women candidates at the state and local levels.
