EMILY's List Announces Endorsement of Lois Murphy for Pennsylvania's 6th Congressional District

WASHINGTON, D.C.- EMILY's List, the nation's largest grassroots political network and financial resource for women running for elective office, today announced its endorsement of Lois Murphy in her bid for Pennsylvania's 6th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives.

"Lois Murphy is a hardworking champion for her community who will work to create jobs and improve security for the people of southeastern Pennsylvania," said Ellen R. Malcolm, president of EMILY's List. "Her tremendous performance in 2004 proved that Jim Gerlach is extremely vulnerable and that this will be one of our best opportunities to add a new Democratic seat to Congress. EMILY's List considers this to be one of its top priority House races and our membership will lend all its considerable strength to seeing that Lois Murphy is victorious."

EMILY's List will again recommend Murphy to its nationwide network of members who strongly backed her run for Congress in 2004. A political newcomer then, Murphy ran a fierce campaign in a presidential election year against a Republican and came within 6,371 votes of unseating him. This cycle, the 6th District is considered "a bellwether for the 2006 mid-term elections," and analysts predict tremendous difficulty for Jim Gerlach in the face of growing concern over the Republican administration's failures on a wide variety of domestic and international fronts.

A working mother of two, Murphy is an accomplished attorney who has dedicated her legal practice to representing families, small business owners, and non-profits. She serves on the Pennsylvania Commission for Women and has been a board member and president of NARAL Pro-Choice Pennsylvania. The combination of her extensive career experience, strong local roots, and the foundation of support built from her previous campaign give Murphy the political momentum needed to successfully overcome Jim Gerlach in the upcoming 2006 election cycle.

"I am proud of the support of the thousands of individual women and men who are members of EMILY's List," said Murphy. "Jim Gerlach has time and time again failed to deliver for the voters in the 6th district and I plan to work hard to ensure that Pennsylvania priorities and not Washington politics are at the forefront of the Congressional agenda."

With more than 100,000 members, including nearly 4,000 in Pennsylvania, EMILY's List is the largest political action committee in the nation. Since its founding in 1985, EMILY's List has helped elect 61 pro-choice Democratic women to the U.S. House, 11 to the U.S. Senate, and eight governors. In only ten election cycles, EMILY's List has helped elect hundreds of pro-choice Democratic women to federal office, state legislatures, state constitutional offices and other key local offices.
