EMILY'S List Announces Support of Rosie Mendez for New York City Council

Backing signals confidence in district leader

New York, NY – EMILY's List, the nation's largest grassroots political network and financial resource for women running for elective office, is proud to announce its backing of Rosie Mendez in her bid for New York City Council, District 2. Through the Political Opportunity Program, an initiative to mobilize, train, and financially support candidates running at the state and local levels, EMILY's List has extended its support to Rosie Mendez.

"Rosie Mendez is an excellent candidate who is well-positioned to become the next councilmember," said Karen M. White, national political director for EMILY's List. "As a long-time district leader, she has been a determined fighter for the people of District 2. She is a dedicated administrator who is committed to protecting the people of her district."

Mendez has served as the East Village Democratic district leader since 1997, having been elected to four terms. She has championed working family issues, such as affordable housing and access to legal representation, and serves professionally as a legal services attorney. Additionally, she has worked tirelessly for this district having served as Chief of Staff to the term-limited councilwoman Margarita Lopez, whose seat she is seeking to fill.

"On September 13th, we know the voters of City Council District 2 will show their confidence in Rosie Mendez's leadership. Her victory in this upcoming election will be a result of the breadth and depth of support Mendez has built across the entire district," continued White. "Mendez has worked hard as a housing specialist and a community advocate and voters will recognize that she will work hard for them as their next city councilwoman."

EMILY's List is the largest political action committee in the nation. EMILY's List has helped elect 61 pro-choice Democratic women to the U.S. House, 11 to the U.S. Senate, and eight governors. EMILY's List has also helped elect hundreds of pro-choice Democratic women to state legislatures, state constitutional offices, and key local offices. In 2001, EMILY's List expanded its support of pro-choice Democratic women candidates by establishing its Political Opportunity Program (POP). Through POP, EMILY's List is developing and nurturing the next generation of pro-choice Democratic women political leaders by investing in women candidates at the state and local levels.
